Variances in the extrudate flow are investigated and described. Empirical and analytical models suggest the presence of vortical fountain flows in the melt channels of plasticating screws adjacent a slower moving solids bed. Such a phenomenon would suggest potential strategies for remediation, as well as potential opportunities for exploitation.
