Polymer parts with regular microstructured surfaces are being a subject of study in several fields. Nowadays, typical microstructure arrays mimicking some natural elements can be used to improve surface properties, such as wetting, optical performance and adhesion. For example, wetting properties can be improved by mimicking the lotus leaf hierarchical structure, which is composed by a micro scale roughness covered by a nano scale one. The aim of this study is to test different polymers behaviour when replicating, with both injection molding and compression molding, the lotus leaf alike microstructure using a nickel shim as a template and evaluate the effect of the processing conditions. The produced parts were subjected to different characterization tests such as microscopy, water contact angle, abrasion and stone chip resistance.
