Optimum Screw and Process Designs for Twin Screw Extruders for PLA Formulations

Polylactide (PLA) is the most common bioplastic resin processed today. Twin screw extruders are used to compound and devolatilize wide ranging PLA formulations. Special considerations are required to minimize heat, shear and hydrolysis to maintain and improve mechanical properties. Various studies to optimize the PLA process utilizing a twin screw extruder will be presented and explained. Specifically: boundary condition limitations (melt temperature and torque), melting mechanisms, compounding of fillers, and minimization of hydrolysis and molecular weight loss.
