Engineering Graphene with Polymers for the Preparation of Nanocomposites

Graphene has attracted increased attention in recent years due to its exceptional electronic, mechanical and thermal properties. The combination of graphene with existing polymer-based materials1 has afforded promising applications. Strong efforts have been made to produce single layer graphene with minimal framework damage. A useful approach would be to exfoliate and functionalise the graphene layers directly from graphite or few-layer graphene. Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) are well-known precursors that afford isolated graphene layers avoiding framework damage2.In this work we have used this method in order to introduce charges into few-layer graphene starting material to create electrostatic repulsion. We have used different grafting techniques (grafting from and grafting to) that allow the introduction of well-defined polymers on the graphene layers. The results suggest that the grafting from approach results in an increase in the grafting ratio and solubility of the material in organic solvents. On the other hand, the grafting to approach showed an increase in the grafting ratio when using low molecular weight polymers; the solubility did not change significantly in this case. The conformation of the attached polymers was predicted using de Gennes’ model3; the grafting from products would grow in a brush-like fashion according to this model, while the grafting to hybrids would follow a mushroom regime (where the polymer chain coils up on itself). Moreover, the functionalisation process is highly versatile and would allow the introduction of a wide variety of polymers and copolymers on graphene. The improved solubility of the material in acetone after functionalisation will allow better compatibility with an epoxy resin in order to prepare novel composites 1 Huang, X et al Chem. Soc.
