The degradation and color loss of different polymer products which are being used in open environment is mainly due to Ultraviolet (UV) light. In this work the possibility of using different UV light absorbing Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for the protection of polypropylene (PP) against UV light degradation is explored. First, possible transition metal containing LDH were synthesized and attempts for organomodification including ion exchange, reconstruction and melt intercalation were performed. Successfully, ZnTi LDH was organically modified by Dodecylbenzene sodium sulfonate (SDBS) and Lauric acid (LA). Four combinations of LDHs were used in PP composite preparation. Decomposition, UV absorption properties and photooxidation of all the four composites and pure PP were measured. Significant changes were recognized in pure PP when added these four types of LDHs. Most significant results were obtained by the addition of ZnTI-SDBS LDH in PP. Thermal stability of PP was increased by 70 oC by the addition of only 5% ZnTI-SDBS LDH. The results appear to open a new field of research as UV absorbing LDHs for polymers, which may be used in different applications with combination of polymers such as in solar cells, electrostatic devices, LED devices and other related application.
