In this study, the effect of different quantities of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and melamine cyanurate (MC) as flame retardants, on the flammability of polyolefin compounds was studied. The effect of using polystyrene as a carbon source companion with flame retardants was also evaluated. The Flammability parameter results were obtained by cone calorimeter test at a uniform external irradiance of 50 kW/m2, and by combustion tests (limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94). Test results showed that by adding polystyrene to formulations, the carbon dioxide production is decreased, and flame retardancy properties are improved via the synergistic effect of APP and MC.
