Research and development in biodegradable polymers has received increasing attention in recent years because of their wide range application in environmental friendly packaging and automotive applications. Among the biodegradable polymers, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) is a promising polymer for various potential applications such as injection molded products and packaging films, sheets. However, insufficient gas barrier properties, higher liquid permeability and lower crystallization rate, are often not sufficient for various end-use applications. Carbon nanotubues (CNTs) are alternative candidates as nucleating agents for polymers. The aim of this study is to enhance the crystallization of PBS by using hexanol functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (Hf-MWCNT). A twin screw microcompounder was used to prepare the PBS/Hf-MWCNT nanocomposites. The modification process was characteriazed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The common kinetic models such as Avrami, Ozawa, Kissinger were used to evaluate non-isothermal crystallization behaviour of PBS and PBS/Hf-MWCNT nanocomposites by using differantial scanning calorimeter (DSC). Besides, a polarized optical microscope (POM) equipped with a hot-stage was used to examine the morphology during the crystal growth.
