In this research, nanocomposites based on urethane acrylate resin and nanoclay were prepared at various clay contents including 0.5, 1.5, 3, 5, 7 and 10 wt.%. %. The nanocomposites were characterized using viscometry, XRD and TEM techniques. Also, mechanical and physical properties of nanocomposites including tensile, flexural, impact, water absorption, hardness and burning rate were investigated. The results for XRD and TEM showed an exfoliated structure at clay content up to 3 wt% while at higher loadings intercalation of silicate layers happened. Viscosity measurements showed an increase of 84% in viscosity with the addition of 3 wt% nanoclay. An increase of 25% was observed in tensile and flexural modulus. This was 75%, 90% and 35% for tensile, flexural and impact strength, respectively. A decrease of 32% in water absorption of nanocomposites containing 3 wt% of nanoclay was observed. A self-extinguishing behaviour was observed in nanocomposites at nanoclay loadings between 0.5-5 wt%.
