Research efforts in the past decades on nano-reinforced polymeric materials provide numerous examples of property enhancement across multiple physical property domains including thermo- mechanical, dielectric, optical, and other properties. The project develops an open access data resource (NanoMine) for the polymer nanocomposites community, facilitating faster nanocomposite design and insertion into advanced applications. The capability will support three major types of users: researchers interested in comparing their results in detail to other work; researchers exploring, discovering, and quantifying fundamental scientific principles that govern processing-structure-property (p-s- p) relationships; and materials designers interested in using nanocomposites for advanced applications. NanoMine is created as an open access, easy to use, persistent, flexible data resource for the polymer nanocomposites community that is scalable and will enable improved understanding of p-s- p relationships and design of commercially relevant polymer nanocomposites. We combine a curated database, data-driven analysis tools, and physics-based modeling for polymer nanocomposite analysis and design. To standardize terminology and structure of parameters across p-s-p domains, we created a data template using hierarchical XML schema by curating more than 30 recent papers and experimental data from in house and collaborators. The current template contains parameters that account for metadata of data source, characteristics of polymer and filler particle phases along with surface chemistry and constituent pre-processing, experimental processing and characterization procedures, microstructure dispersion of the nano-phase, as well as reported and measured material properties. This template serves as a comprehensive collection of parameters to account for a nanocomposite sample and a robust ontology is being developed based on the schema and initial data.
