Temperature-sensitive poly N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) particles have wide application in drug carrier, tissue engineering, adsorption agent, biosensor and so on. It is usually necessary to introduce comonomers, e.g. methylacrylate or methyl acrylic acid, into PNIPAM polymer chains for their application and obtaining new functions, e.g. pH responsiveness. P(NIPAM) particles were synthesized in aqueous phase by most researchers. But, the aqueous polymerization is disadvantage to introduce new functional groups into polymer because it is difficult for some comonomers to be dissolved into water. In this research, an attempt was made to synthesize P(NIPAM-co-MMA) particles in organic phase. As an example, P(NIPAM) particles and P(NIPAM-co-MMA) particles were synthesized in organic solvent. The preliminary result indicated the morphology of particles is asymmetric and could be tuned with different feed ratio of monomers. Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis was used to characterized their composition. The yield of particles was still low. With the development of the experiments, P(NIPAM-co-MMA) particles or other responsive particles will succeed in synthesizing polymer particles in organic solvent with higher productivity.
