Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were melt-mixed at 400 °C with poly ether ketone (PEK) via a twin-screw extruder. Morphological observation showed the presence of remaining ‘agglomerates’ of MWNTs in the polymer [1]. The formation of ‘network-like’ structure was also evident at 1-2 wt% of MWNTs in the PEK [2,3].The addition of 2 wt% pristine MWNTs in PEK has increased the tensile modulus of the polymer from 3200 to 4150 MPa. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) has registered between 171-175 °C for PEK in the presence of MWNTs. Further, storage modulus for PEK at 30 °C has increased from 2200 MPa to 4790 MPa at 2wt% MWNTs concentration [4]. Melt rheological analysis showed that rheological percolation threshold for PEK was observed between 1-2 wt% of MWNTs [5,6]. Further, an attempt has been made to understand the variation in mechanical properties of PEK in the presence of MWNTs through morphological observation, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and melt-rheological analysis.
