TiO2 has been widely studied as an anode material in lithium ion batteries, due to its abundant mineral resources, low cost, environmental benignity, high safety and a high theoretical capacity. However, a problem for TiO2 electrode material is its low conductivity, which can be improved by composite with carbon materials. Here, we demonstrate an inexpensive and green method, solid-state mechanochemistry shear milling, to coat anatase TiO2 nanoparticle with amorphous carbon coating layers. TiO2-C hybrid composites were manufactured in large scale starting from titanium dioxide and polyacrylic acid(PAA). First, the carbon precursor layers were introduced into TiO2 particle by solid state shear milling(S3M), in which a large amount of carboxylic group could be grafted to titanium dioxide. Finally, the resultant mixture composite was carbonized by calcining under Ar atmosphere. The TGA result showed that with increasing milling times, there was about 18 wt % carbon existing in the TiO2-C composite. The low peak integrated intensity of D-band to G-band on the Raman spectra indicated the existence of disorder carbon structure. All these results demonstrated that the solid-state mechanochemistry shear milling could be a novel and effective method to realize the surfacefunctionalization of TiO2 nanoparticle which offers with improved cycling performance.
