ABSTRACT: Hydrophobic and oleophilic porous materials were successfully prepared by blending high density polyethylene(HDPE) with polyethylene oxide(PEO) via extrusion molding method and subsequently removing hydrosoluble PEO using leaching technique. The morphological structure of the oil sorbent was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), meanwhile, the investigation of porosity, pore size distribution and surface area of the oil-absorbents was conducted by BET. The porous oil sorbent exhibited excellent oil/water selectivity in the cleanup of oil over water. Due to hydrophobicity, large pore volume and high capillary effect, the oil absorption ratio of the oil sorbent reached up to 450%. Furthermore, the absorbed oils or organic solvents can be recovered by centrifuging the oil-absorbents, and after 100 absorbing/recovering cycles the HDPE oil-absorbents showed little loss of their absorption capacities and own weights.Owing to its high oil sorption capacity, excellent hydrophobic property and reusability, and good environmental friendliness, the as-prepared oil sorbent can be considered as a promising candidate to clean up the spilled oil and organic solvents.
