In recent years optical non-destructive methods for 3D surface metrology have become increasingly important. Due to the high-complex geometry of additive manufactured components, complete surface characterization will play a crucial part to ensure high accuracy of its manufacturing process. At PPS conference we will present the operating principle of Focus-Variation and a complete measurement solution in the field of additive manufacturing. The technique of Focus-Variation combines the small depth of focus of an optical system with vertical scanning to provide topographical and color information from the variation of focus. The main characteristics of the system which is based on the technology of Focus-Variation are that it delivers high resolution measurements of even complex surfaces, that it is able to measure surfaces with steep flanks up to 87° and strongly varying surface reflection properties. At PPS conference we will explain how the entire process of additive manufacturing is monitored with a non-contact measurement device by Alicona. The measurement solution includes: 1. Profile-based as well as area-based measurements to characterize the topology of the component that was produced by laser powder bed fusion: • Microcrack analysis on the surface • Surface roughness parameters 2. Form measurement to meet the required dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) 3. Measurement on the surface finish to achieve target tolerances in form, waviness and roughness The Alicona Focus-Variation technology is ideally suited to evaluate laser-sintered 3D objects. This method verifies that machined surfaces have the same functional parameters as surfaces of components which are produced by substractive processes.
