Chitin is besides cellulose the most abundant polysaccharide on earth with an annual production capacity of about 100 billion tonnes of those 10 thousand are reconditioned. The source for chitin in addition to algae and fungi are especially shell components of crabs, shrimp and spiders. By the use of a chemical conversion process, the deacetylation, chitin is transformed into chitosan. Currently, chitosan is used especially in the pharmaceutical and medical industry as absorption and carrier material. This talk discusses the fundamental opportunities of chitosan as a functional additive in different biopolymer matrices for demanding applications. The produced chitosan compounds have been injection moulded into test samples, tested and validated. Following characteristics have been investigated: •Mechanical properties: strength, toughness, heat resistance. •Fat absorption properties: effect on surface energy, self-lubrication, etc. •Biological properties: antimicrobial activity. This talk will give an overview about the range of applications for chitosan containing compounds in industrial scale.
