The demand for biobased polymers is growing rapidly. However, due to production processes consisting of several batch processes, biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) still have the potential for an increased commercially exploitation. In order to overcome these problems, twelve partners launched the InnoREX project in December 2013. This FP7 EU-project aims at the continuous, highly precise polymerization of PLA using alternative energies for reactive extrusion. On this poster two innovations within the project will be presented: The influence of Ultrasound- and Microwave incorporation into the processing length of a twin-screw extruder will be shown. The principal idea and the equipment available at Fraunhofer ICT will be shown; the resulting changes in process conditions and the influence on extruder setup will be discussed. The resulting materials will be compared and the influence on process behaviour and reachable throughput will be revealed. Finally options for scaling up to industrial relevant process conditions will be discussed for both types of alternative energies.
